Pretzel Science

Pretzels are a great way to introduce to children the concept of yeast and learning how it rises. There are also so many other fun activities that we tried today to go along with out pretzel baking!

What We Did Today

  • Made our own dough for the pretzels
  • While we let the dough rise, we did “Pretzel Yoga” and learned some awesome yoga poses! We loved turning our bodies into pretzels
  • We read the story “Walter the Baker”
  • Played Pick Up Sticks in small groups
  • Formed our dough into different shapes and cooked our pretzels! They turned out delicious!

What We Learned

  • That yeast makes dough rise and that we can form pretzels into any shape
  • The practice of yoga and a new way to calm and relax our bodies while still exercising
  • New yoga poses! Ask your children about them!
  • The story “Walter the Baker” taught us that sometimes when we are trying to do something and it does not turn out the way we expected, we can discover something new!

How to Keep Exploring

  • Find a parent-child yoga class to take with your child. It can not only bring you closer together, but also take time to relax with your child
  • Bake your own pretzels! Find different recipes with your child and see how the yeast can make the dough rise. You can also form your own shapes out of them!
